Berserk Shirts: A Fan's Guide to Guts, Griffith and the Manga

Few manga cast a shadow as long as Berserk. Kentaro Miura's dark fantasy epic has shaped video games, anime, metal album art and a generation of artists, and its lone swordsman, Guts, is one of the most recognizable figures in all of manga. If you're a longtime reader, you already know why the series means so much. If you're just getting curious, this guide covers the basics, where the story stands today, and the best Berserk shirts for wearing your fandom.
What Is Berserk? A Quick, Spoiler-Light Primer
Berserk began serialization in Japan in 1989, created by Kentaro Miura. It follows Guts, a mercenary with a massive sword, a mechanical arm and a past that refuses to let him go. The story is famous for its brutality, but fans stay for its emotional depth: questions about ambition, friendship, trauma and whether a person can keep fighting when the world seems built against them.
Guts and Griffith: The Heart of the Story
The series' most beloved stretch, the Golden Age arc, centers on the bond between Guts and Griffith, the charismatic leader of a mercenary company called the Band of the Hawk. Their friendship and rivalry drives everything that follows, and it's why so many Berserk designs show the two of them together. Without spoiling anything: few relationships in fiction are debated as passionately.
The Anime Adaptations
Many fans first met Guts through the 1997 TV anime, which adapted the Golden Age arc and has a cult following thanks to its atmosphere and soundtrack. A trilogy of Golden Age arc films followed in the 2010s, and later CG series continued the story. Still, most readers will tell you the manga is the definitive way to experience Berserk, especially for Miura's incredibly detailed artwork.
Berserk in 2026: The Story Continues
Kentaro Miura passed away in May 2021, a loss that was felt across the entire manga world. Since then, the series has continued with art by Studio Gaga, Miura's former assistants, under the supervision of Kouji Mori, his longtime close friend. In June 2026, Berserk returned to Young Animal magazine in Japan with Chapter 384, the first in a run of new chapters. Dark Horse Comics, which publishes the series in English, has said these chapters will eventually be collected in a volume. For readers, it means the journey Miura started is still being honored with care.

Styling Tips for Anime Fans
- Go monochrome: Berserk's color world is black, red and steel grey. Matching your outfit to that palette makes a graphic tee look intentional.
- Add a heavy layer: A leather or canvas jacket, or an oversized flannel, echoes Guts' rugged style without crossing into cosplay.
- Balance busy prints: With a detailed full-art shirt, keep the rest simple: plain pants, solid shoes, no competing graphics.
- Choose your fit: Our shirts are unisex. Size up for a relaxed streetwear fit or stay true to size for a classic look.
Where to Start Reading
