Graphic Tee Size Guide: How to Find the Right Fit for Band Shirts

Typographic banner reading Graphic Tee Size Guide: Find Your Perfect Fit on a warm brown background

You found the perfect band tee. The design is right, the color is right, and then you hit the size dropdown and freeze. Medium or large? Will it shrink? Is unisex the same as men's? Getting the fit wrong is the most common reason a great graphic tee ends up at the back of the drawer, so let's fix that.

This graphic tee size guide walks you through how our shirts and sweatshirts are built, the easiest way to measure, and how to size for the exact look you want.

First, Know What You're Buying

Before you choose a size, it helps to understand the blank the design is printed on. Fabric weight and blend affect how a shirt drapes and how it behaves in the wash.

Our t-shirts

Our tees are printed on 100% pre-shrunk cotton Gildan shirts with a 5.3 oz/yd² fabric weight. That's a classic mid-weight tee: sturdy enough to hold its shape, soft enough to wear all day. Because the cotton is pre-shrunk, you shouldn't expect dramatic shrinking, especially if you wash cold and tumble dry low.

Our sweatshirts

Our crewnecks use a Gildan 50% cotton, 50% polyester blend at 8.0 oz/yd², with a ribbed collar, cuffs, and waistband. The poly blend helps the sweatshirt keep its shape and resist pilling, and it's also pre-shrunk.

What "unisex" means

Unisex sizing is cut on a straight, traditional t-shirt pattern rather than a tapered or fitted one. For most men, it fits like a regular tee in their usual size. Many women find unisex runs a bit roomier, so going one size down can give a closer fit if that's what you prefer. Most of our designs come in S through 2XL.

The Easiest Way to Find Your Size

Forget guessing based on what size you wear at another store. Brands vary wildly. Instead, use a shirt you already love.

  1. Pick your favorite tee. Choose one that fits exactly how you like it.
  2. Lay it flat. Smooth it out on a table or bed with no wrinkles.
  3. Measure chest width. Measure straight across, from armpit seam to armpit seam.
  4. Measure length. Go from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar, straight down to the bottom hem.
  5. Compare. Open the Size Chart tab on any product page and pick the size whose numbers are closest to yours.

If you land between two sizes, decide based on the look you're going for, which brings us to the fun part.

Choose Your Fit: Classic, Relaxed, or Oversized

Classic fit: your true size

Order the size that matches your measurements for a clean, everyday fit that tucks easily and layers under jackets. This works best for bold, centered logos, like the Devo De-Evolution T-Shirt or the The Killers Band Logo T-Shirt, where you want the graphic sitting right in the middle of your chest.

Relaxed fit: one size up

Going up one size gives you that broken-in, vintage concert-tee feel. The sleeves fall a little lower and the body drapes instead of clinging. It's the sweet spot for album-art designs like the Stereolab Cliff T-Shirt or the playful Primus Monkey Astronaut T-Shirt.

Oversized fit: two sizes up

For a streetwear silhouette, size up twice. An oversized tee pairs well with bike shorts, wide-leg jeans, or worn as a dress with boots. Just keep in mind that the print scales with the size of the shirt, so a bigger shirt usually means a bigger graphic.

How Sweatshirt Sizing Is Different

Sweatshirts are meant to be layered, so they have a little more room built in. A few things to remember:

  • Plan for layers. If you'll wear a hoodie or flannel underneath, your true size usually has enough room. Planning to wear it over a tee only? True size works too.
  • Ribbed cuffs change the look. Because the cuffs and waistband gather, sizing up creates a cozy, slouchy shape rather than looking sloppy.
  • Typographic designs love a slouch. A text-based design like the Throbbing Gristle Typography Sweatshirt looks great one size up with straight-leg jeans.
  • Bright logos look sharp in true size. The Duran Duran Logo Sweatshirt is a good example of a design that pops when the fit is clean.

Buying a Shirt as a Gift?

Sizing for someone else is tricky, but these tricks help:

  • Check their laundry. Peek at the tag on a tee they wear constantly, or borrow one to measure.
  • When in doubt, size up. A slightly big band tee still gets worn. A tight one usually doesn't.
  • Sweatshirts are more forgiving. If you truly have no idea, a crewneck is the safer gift.

Keep the Fit You Chose

A great fit only lasts if you care for the shirt. Wash it inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or hang dry. Skip bleach and dry cleaning, and iron inside out on low if you need to. If you notice a faint stain or yellow tint around a brand-new print, don't worry. It's a normal part of the printing process and disappears after the first wash.

Quick Size Cheat Sheet

  • Fitted look: Size down one (especially for women in unisex sizing).
  • Everyday classic: True size.
  • Vintage concert vibe: One size up.
  • Oversized streetwear: Two sizes up.
